Yesterday recap

Lazy morning (but don’t confuse that with sleeping in). Breakfast, news, and helping the gorls get their day started. Did some of my Sunday chores and watched a little NFL football until wife and I went out for our date day.

We stayed in town and did some normal middle aged tasks without any kids 😁. I picked up a Dell branded backpack at The Goodwill for a few bucks and instantly regretted it when I got home. Yes, its a corny bag. It got my attention because it is configured for hauling Dell laptops and such for business trips. But I didn’t see that it doesn’t have a slot for a water bottle, so there’s no way I can use this bag. Wasted some money because I’m an idiot.

We stopped at Harbor Freight so I could grab a tie down net for my truck. When I got home I found that even the smallest one is too big and I can’t use it. Again, I’m an idiot and wasted some money.

Hit the pharmacy to pick up my presciptions and, once again, my fucking doctor can’t even do the most basic shit. I have requested, in person, 3 times that they change my prescriptions to 90 day supply. Motherfucker did not change it. So now I need to contact them, again, and request the prescription change.

Honestly, why do I try? Why do I let people convince me to put in any effort? To believe that “this time will be different”? Why do I waste my time even going to this office?

To recap: By the time I hit 2PM I had wasted $30 and found my doctor appointment was useless.

Cool.

Spent the rest of the afternoon watching NFL football with my son and doing chores. Also got my truck loaded and did the vehicle maintenance check. With it turning to winter we put significantly less miles on the cars for the next 3-ish months, so I need to figure out when I want to do some maintenance work. Do I do it now or wait until the spring? I think I’d rather hold onto the money now and not have any extra expenses until I pick work back up in the spring. Hold onto the cash so to speak.

In the evening I toyed around with a laptop and realized that the laptop life isn’t for me. I wrote a long thread on Mastodon about it. I keep running into the same problem using a desktop and a laptop, which is that the laptop will quickly get out of sync with everything. I can go days and days without opening the laptop because I don’t need it for my daily work life and once I get home I just use my desktop. The laptop will just sit in my bag. Then when I finally do use it, I have a 50% shot I’m going to do so offline. Which means it won’t have any of my newest files or latest edits. It can sync, yes, if I have an internet connection. But for work, that is rare. Mostly I am in areas with poor reception and no public wifi. Think big waterfront houses far from cell towers. They won’t even let me use their bathroom let alone their wifi.

I either roll with a laptop as my only machine or I ditch the laptop and got mobile + desktop only. The laptop only gives me one more thing I have to create a management schedule around, which is a PITA.

Dinner, gorls bedtime, and then wife and I finished Ark of the Sun God.

Gratitude

  • Spent nice time with wife on our date day and then hanging out with the boy for some football watching.

How are you feeling today?

Bad. Had a rough mental day yesterday that will linger for a few days.

Todo

Chores

  • Starting our new install contstruction job. Today we will walkthough the process with the customer, prep our parts, get pipe scheduled for delivery, and dig up where our main points of connection will happen. We will be sharing the site with a drainage contractor, so we are being careful not to step on each others toes. We will probably install this one backwards, starting at the end and working back to the connection points.
  • Hit the bank and the gas station on my way home. All leftover from last week since I was home a lot. I don’t like to go out unless I can bundle trips together.

Fun

  • WWE Monday Night Raw with the fam.

Projects

  • I had started building out laptops because I wanted to have a portable homelab. It could be my EDC and help with long downtime between jobs while I hang at a site or in the truck. But, I’m giving up on the laptop life. Now I need to do some thinking and notes about what I need my phone to be and what is missing.
