Today’s recap

I had a hard time dragging myself out of bed this morning. Once I was up it was slow moving. Breakfast, news peek, and then clear the dishwasher.

Hung out with the gorls and then left for work. Our job today was with one of our best customers, who unfortunately lost her husband last year. She has since sold their previous home and moved to something a little more managable. I say little because it is still huge. But, a track house. Her previous home was on a half acre that butted against a small lake. The house was sprawling with multiple other structures and pulled the water for the irrigation system out of the lake. It was a complicated system. But, her and her husband built it custom. It was their dream home. Once he passed she decided to move on.

We have these kinds of conversations a lot with customers. Its no surprise that a lot of elderly folks hire contractors and we have our fair share. It is tricky for them because they need someone to do things they can no longer do. But, they can also be taken advantage of easily. We work hard with these customers to always be trusting, straightforward, and speak to them about other options before they start spending money. We hear so many horror stories and we do our best to be the good guys.

This customer had a second shed added to her backyard and we needed to adjust the sprinkler system around it. We installed the system last summer, so it was easy to find where all our pipes went and how to reconfigure now that a chunk of the grass was gone. The grass is a low priority for this customer as she loves to garden in the beds. Which means we fixed up the grass, but spent most of our time making sure the planter beds were covered evenly before she starts her annual plantings.

While working it poured rain the entire time. I was soaked. My rain gear was not up to the challenge, so I ordered some new water repellent so I can fix it up later. Should arrive in the next few days. Say what you want about Amazon and modern shopping, it is so nice to need something and order from a jobsite and have at the house in 48 hours. No extra stops needed.

Got home and cleaned up my tools (completely covered in mud), hung up my rain gear, and put my boots on the shoe dryer. No rain is expected tomorrow, but need to be prepared. Otherwise you’re in for a real, real bad day.

After a hot shower we all hung out, watched WWE Monday Night Raw, and had dinner. I have started my no grain diet and so far I feel better. Less mucus, easier time swallowing, and less stomach pain. However, I will stab someone for some chips and salsa, one of my go-to snacks.

We are onto The Dark Knight Rises tonight.

Projects

I saw Mark Pitblado share a way to preview data files in Yazi using duckdb and I immediately jumped on it. This is a Yazi plugin that will preview various databases and spreadsheet files. Its another tool in the belt for my favorite file manager. Now to tag in zkbro about this plugin, my Yazi homie.

Daily gratitude

  • I’m grateful for our customer today. She trusts us and I always try my best to keep that trust.
  • I used something from my prep kit! Had to get out my umbrella so I could glue some fittings together without it getting rained on.
  • We are still watching game fails with the gorls before bed and having a lot of fun.

Tomorrow’s big thing(s)

New day, new job. We are adding a new section of drip line to an existing customers backyard and then probably gonna pop over to her sisters place a few doors down for some other misc. work.

Get those plumbing supplies I never got today.

Loose thoughts

LibreOffice is jank.

I have these conversations with folks. I say, “Some thing is bad” and they say “Its better than other thing” like they win the argument. Here’s an example: Target sucks. The response from others: Its better than Walmart! Okay, maybe so (doubtful). But, let’s put the comparison aside and just talk about Target. Think about it as a standalone experience. It sucks ass. Almost no human cashiers. The one’s they have are the slowest cashiers on the planet. Self-checkout line 200 people long and none of them know how to use it. Products are over-priced for what they are. Its weirdly quiet.
