Today’s recap
I am beat.
Up a little earlier than normal, breakfast, and work prep. I had a lot of extra tools to load this morning since this job is so out of the ordinary for us. Hung out with the gorls for a bit and then hit the road.
Our job today is continuing to refurbish a long stream and pond that goes along the entryway to a house. Last year (about this time of year, too) we refurbished the upper section, including the pump, spillway and the first half of the stream. The construction is old on this water feature and was not installed with rubber liner. Instead, the original construction is using a very thin plastic sheeting and then poured concrete on top. Of course over the years the concrete has settled, cracked, and is no longer water-tight. It leaks like a sieve. What we are doing is pulling back all of the rock, covering the concrete with liner, and then rebuilding the rock covering. Here’s a couple of pics from the upper section.

This lower section was much more challenging. There is a steep drop to the pond and since we are working with the existing landscape and concrete, it has become difficult to make it look good. With the liner it is functional. No leaks. However, it is ugly until we finish adding rock. Here’s the lower section with the liner, but unfished rock.

As you can see, this is very much still a work in progress. We got a lot cleaned up, banged out concrete, cleaned up the water feature, and have a functional falls now. We need to order different rock and then come back to finish. This will probably happen first week of March. But, I am beat. We hauled rock all day and, because of the stair to the entryway, it was all by hand or in buckets. I also had to climb around under all those plants to set the liner. We didn’t only work on the falls. We also rehabed a long section of the stream, so it has been a long day.
My hands are tore up from this project, though. They have all this lava rock and pumice stone around the pond and it has destroyed my hands.
Got home and reorganized my truck, preparing it for the rain we are going to get tomorrow. Dinner, hang out with the fam, and then gorls bed time. We are probably gonna start Backdraft tonight.
Projects
None today. Long work day.
Daily gratitude
- Grateful for my son, who will be joining my business officially next week for this big job 😅. I will tell him tomorrow.
- I guess I should be grateful for buckets.
- Water features are fun to work on. Let’s me be more artistic in my work.
Tomorrow’s big thing(s)
I need to go to Tacoma to get parts for our next job. Its our first big buy of the year, I’m sure my vendor will be happy to see me.
Wife is meeting up with our oldest for a gym hangout, so I need to be back in time.
Loose thoughts
While I was driving to work I thought a lot about the front porch and the changes I want for the plants. Drew up a diagram and everything. Its gonna be fancy.
