Today’s recap
I am exhausted, so struggling to get this one done. That’s why I didn’t write up a daily yesterday.
First up was finished that pond and waterfall on Tuesday. We had mostly wrapped this job on Monday and only needed to install the pump and get it running. Once we were done doing that we needed to go through the sprinkler system and get it ready for the Spring/Summer season. We really wanted to get all of this done ahead of a significant storm that came in on Wednesday (more on that below). We hustled to get it running and the owner is very happy with the results.
We found a couple leaks in the sprinkler system on the mainline and had to spend the rest of the day working on those. After we wrapped and went through everything with the owner I needed to swing through my oldests place to drop off a bunch of paperwork. Once home I was in full recovery mode. Carrying rock up and down those stairs destroyed my legs.
Today I had a sprinkler tune-up for one of our oldest customers. He is 98 and, for lack of a better term, a hoot. He lives in this fantastic old home near the waterfront and cares deeply about his landscape. He’s having more grass put in and needed the system adjusted for the new shape. This is all fine, except it absolutely poured rain all day. I was soaked by lunch. Luckily I keep a change of clothes in my VEDC, so once I finished the job I was able to change into dry clothes for the drive home. But, I’m chilled to the bone freezing still. My shirt and pants were so wet while working I could feel the streams of water running down my legs and back. And this is through my rain gear. All of my gear is so wet I don’t think it will dry by tomorrow. So, tomorrow is going to suck fucking donkey balls.
Home and in recovery mode. I was working alone today and had to go fast to get it all done in one day. No breaks. No lunch. Just me digging, moving sprinklers, adding sprinklers, and cleaning up in a torrential downpour.
I think we are going to watch some more of the new season of The Night Agent tonight.
Projects
I’ve been sneaking in an hour here and there on getting PostmarketOS ready for all these Asus C100P Chromebooks Mike got. I tested multiple desktops and settled on XFCE over LXQT. I am also switching to the edge channel. If I leave the stable channel on these then the new owner will need to run the channel update every 6 months. Which means they will never get updated. So, do I go with rolling and embrace bugs and breakage? Or do I go stable and know that nothing will ever get updated? I’m going with edge and created a systemd timer to run the updates every 24 hours without user interaction. I would do the same on stable, but I can’t automate doing channel upgrades. Meaning they all run v25.12 and then when v26.06 lands they will stay on the previous version forever. I don’t like that.
This is all currently in testing.
My son came to me and said his USB-C port isn’t working. He has the same phone as me, a Samsung Galaxy S10e. We are both long overdue for a phone upgrade, but neither of us wants to give up this device. I cleaned the port and it appears to be working again. But, the all cables are a little loose. So, I gave him an old wireless charger, too. Seems like the USB-C port is worn out. We shall see how long it lasts.
Daily gratitude
- I’m glad my stop today didn’t get cancelled. I love talking to that customer.
- Once again I’m thankful for my compression socks.
- Working in the rain isn’t that bad. Everyone leaves you alone and does extra stuff for you because they feel guilty watching you work in the rain. Its just water.
Tomorrow’s big thing(s)
Our first HOA meeting, walkthru, and start-up. Talk about people I don’t like. But, I’ll take the work.
Loose thoughts
Windy today and even I can hear the cracks and snaps of the trees. Made me so nervous, thinking a tree branch will fall on me. Remember that at your next daily stand-up. I’m working in the pouring rain and a tree branch might fall on me, and I’m completely soaked as if I just jumped into a pool fully clothed.
