Today’s recap

Planned on working today, but life had other plans.

Woke up, had breakfast, and started getting ready when my brother messaged. Our mom lives on his property in an ADU, so he’s kind of her caretaker. She has been dealing with stomach issues and it finally came to a head. He needed to take her to the hospital. So, we cancelled our workday so we can focus on mom. In the end, she’s fine. It was good she went to the hospital, but nothing that is more serious than a single trip.

My tooth problem also hit a point where I need to take care of it sooner than later, so called my dentist and was able to move my appointment up to tomorrow. I had a filling fall out of a tooth and now a piece of the tooth has broken off.

I don’t know who would want to be me. Other than Wife and family, I live the most miserable life. There is no time I can say things are good and I’m happy. Every day is a trainwreck.

I spent my inbetween time working on the biz books and fretting about our sales. We had a gangbusters February, but March has been abysmal. Some of this is some personal stuff, some is weather. But, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that macro economics isn’t already having an effect on our business. With fuel prices being astronomical ($5/gal. in our area) and only getting worse, plus the the dumbest economic decisions in the history of the US presidency with Captain Idiot at the helm, is lining up perfectly for people cutting back on “non-essential” services. Ya know, things like landscaping. We are at 30% of expected sales and we are an absolutely tiny company. We cannot get people to commit to projects. They all say the same, “Later this Spring.” This is code for, “We are uncertain about our economic position and where the greater economy is going, I don’t want to spend money right now.” Things are looking pretty bleak for the next couple months and I’ve been prepping and planning with Wife.

Projects

I am seriously considering going back to ChromeOS on my Duet. PostmarketOS has been fine. But, my Duet has the same problem every other device I’ve put PostmarketOS on, including the Asus C100P I posted about recently: It doesn’t turn off. When you power any of these devices off the screen turns off, but the machine is still on. So, when I think its off and will save battery, it actually burns through the battery and is dead in my bag. Its this way on the Duet 3, C100P, and even on the Surface RT.

It has a ton of other little papercuts, too. If I dock it, about 10 minutes after the mouse will stop appearing on the second monitor. It works, but no pointer. The screen tearing is awful. Scrolling any website or watching a video has a lot of screen tearing that is super distracting, even for me and I rarely care about such things. But this is bad. Also when docking it will just flat refuse to acknowledge the dock. I have to plug it into the other USB-C port and then switch back. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It is completely random. 80% of the time it won’t recognize the wired internet on the dock.

Are these dealbreakers? No. Is it a fucking pain the ass? Abso-fucking-lutely.

Since I’ve been working on the Asus C100P for the Computer Upcycle Project it also has me thinking about long term support. All of these images are community initiatives and could one day stop getting support because the volunteers move onto other devices. I totally understand that and don’t fault them. But, that also means I’m not betting my devices or one’s I give to other folks on real support. I love that PostmarketOS exists and that its an option for devices. But, there’s a lot of papercuts and future support is a total unknown.

Bleh. I don’t know what to do, but it is top of mind this week.

• Glad mom is okay.
• That *arr stuff is pretty neat, isn’t it?
• Very happy my dentist was able to get me an appointment tomorrow. I want this taken care of sooner than later.

Loose thoughts

I think I’m done with social media. This includes Fedi. I’ve been away for a while and only checking for notifications. Every time I’m there I realize I don’t miss it. Its weird. Just a few months ago I said I liked it because that’s where all my friends are. But now that I’m away, I don’t miss it. I’m so confused.

I finally organized all the open tabs I have on my phone and I’m already back to 8. Dammit.

Firefox on Android fucking sucks.
