Today’s recap
Can I have just one semi-normal day?
Up, breakfast, and out the door to our job. This was for a customer whom we installed a sprinkler system at his mom’s house about 4 years ago and decided he’d like us to come take a look at his place. Its a big house on a huge property. It has a lot of grass that he is slowly taking out and replacing with diverse shrubs and raised garden beds. Super nice guy, too.
We got a plan together and gave him a price. It was higher than he expected, but ultimately agreed. He tried to say, “Can you do it for blank?” Meaning, can you do the same amount of work for less money? You see, I’ve been through a lot of sales training and worked years in sales. I said of course, here’s all the things we can take off and the corners we can cut to get it to that price. He understood right away. The original price was good.
As we dug into the system its clear the homeowner was working on it himself and that’s why it wasn’t working well anymore. One thing we find again and again is the misunderstanding of dynamic water pressure. Only so much water can fit through a pipe and when you either size down pipe, or try to fit more water through the same size pipe, you increase the velocity of the water and you lose more pressure due to friction loss. Sprinklers need both PSI and flow in order to work properly. For example, if you are using rotors, you need at least 50 PSI to the sprinkler and enough water available to run them all. Let’s say your home has a static water pressure of 60 PSI. Then you can only lose 10 PSI through the sprinkler system valves, pipe, and fittings in order to have enough water pressure for the system.
I feel like I can go way off into the weeds on this topic. If you want to know more, let me know and I can write up a dedicated blog post on how to properly design a sprinkler system and how to troubleshoot flow or pressure problems.
Once home there was a large packet waiting for me that came in the mail. This was the legal packet about my dad, his condition in the hospital, and who is becoming his guardian. His brain is beyond fried and can no longer care for himself. I have zero interest stepping in and the packet is just to cover who is (his oldest sister) and what I can do if I want to stop that from happening.
Dinner, gorls bedtime, and then game night with Wife.
Projects
No projects today.
Daily gratitude
- Wife always tries to bring a happy vibe to the house, regardless of the trough of shit I have to wade through.
- Man, that GeoRipper is fucking awesome.
- This customer is a nice guy. Always grateful for nice customers.
Tomorrow’s big thing(s)
Gotta climb on the roof again and do a test to see if I can get a small section to stop leaking.
Loose thoughts
All work and no play make Homer go something something.
