The feeling of deleting my LinkedIn account

Posted on Feb 21, 2024

After having an account for more than 10 years, I deleted my LinkedIn account.

The act of doing this was easy, just a few clicks. I haven’t used it since 2021 and, like most people, I felt like is was a necessary evil. Working in marketing for a large corporation, it felt like something I had to have. Not just for my work, but also for finding other work in the corporate world.

Then, about 3 years ago I quit marketing and I left the corporate world. I founded a contracting business with my brother and became self-employed.

I kept all of my former social media accounts, even though I almost never use any of them (except Mastodon). My thought was if it didn’t work out being a construction contractor, I still need a connection to contacts. Particularly on LinkedIn and Facebook. A few days ago I realized not only do I not need them any more, I probably don’t need them ever again.

Deleting my LinkedIn account is good for my privacy, yet it is not why it feels good that its gone. It feels good that I deleted my account because my contracting business is working. We are busy! The business is growing! We want to hire this summer! Knowing that I successfully removed myself of the horrors of office work and being a member of the corporate hellhole is one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced.

Yes, my job is physically exhausting. But, I don’t work to make some rich asshole even richer. I’m tired because I work for me. The only person that benefits from my long hours and demanding work is me.

So, deleting my LinkedIn account is a powerful feeling because my little business is making it and I couldn’t be happier.

P.S. I took this opportunity to also finally delete my Twitter account. Just Facebook and Reddit to go!
