Little bits update

Posted on Feb 28, 2024

I’ve been working on a few things that individually don’t warrant their own blog post, but wanted to put my notes out there on them.

Sold my crypto

This is connected to my recent post about how tech needs to be regulated, which includes crypto scams and climate impact of modern tech. I (used) to hold a tiny bit of Bitcoin (under $200) as a way to learn more about it. I’ve long thought that Bitcoin does a good job of highlighting the problems with the banking and finance industry, while also not being the future of money.

I still think that is true.

But, the way all crypto is set up is to scam as many people as possible, while also contributing to tech influenced climate change. Going through the process of buying Bitcoin, setting up a wallet to self-custody, and then selling it for fiat further solidified that it is not the future of money or investing. I decided to sell off my tiny amount of Bitcoin and delete my wallet.

Winter goals

Back in October I laid out my plans for winter tech projects which included configuring my home server to turn off every night to save power. After many months of testing and automating, I finally have it where I want it and is off for 6.5 hours a night.

Overall it will only save me about $40 annually, but the main goal wasn’t cost reduction. I am always looking for ways to reduce our energy usagge for a lower climate impact home. I’m happy I got this done, it ended up being way more complicated than I originally thought. If I am able to find the money this summer, I would like to have the server also running from solar + battery when it is on. But, because Microsoft is a bunch of assholes, any extra money is probably going to buying new computers for my kids.

Hobby projects

I’ve accomplished a lot in the last few months and I’m quickly running out of projects to do for fun. Once the weather warms up I’m going to be spending more time in the garden. But, I’m looking for some ideas for projects.

Ping me on Mastodon and let me know what you are working on. I’m looking for some inspiration and I’d love to hear what you are working on or something you’ve completed recently.
