Tech and a personal code of ethics
One of the most disappointing aspects of tech enthusiasts is their general lack of morals and ethics. Yes, there are exceptions and I know many people who value their code of ethics closely. But, the vast, vast majority of people will dump any ethics they have so computer go brrr.
There’s many examples of how the tech industry desperately needs regulation. There are also many, many examples of how tech doesn’t care about women, domestic violence, climate change, fascism, or even delivering facts on their bullshit machine. They will do anything for money and, in exchange, tech enthusiasts will justify that behavior.
I don’t want this to turn in to a meandering diatribe of all the failings of tech. Rather, I want people to stop and truly think about their morals and their code of ethics.
Having a code of ethics means you have to say no to things you might like because it doesn’t fit with your code. Its supposed to be hard. There’s supposed to be hard decisions. You might have to miss out!
But, nothing should be more important than your morals and ethics. You have to draw a line at some point and say no more, nothing past this point.
What does that take? Does it take accepting domestic violence perpetrators to conferences? Does it take literally undoing a decade of climate work just so you can use an A.I. chatbot that tells lies? Does it take your operating system taking a screenshot every 5 seconds while you use your computer?
There has to be a point where you say no more. I wish more people would use their morals and ethics as a guide. But, maybe they are and the disgusting tech world we live in is what you dirty fucks actually want.
