I'm insulted by the Minecraft movie trailer
The Minecraft movie trailer was (and still is) a hot topic in my house. I found it insulting and felt like they were making fun of me, my kids, and everyone that loves Minecraft. Microsoft, Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros., and the director Jared Hess don’t get it and this movie should have never been made.
My Minecraft journey
I started playing Minecraft in 2014. At the time I had no idea what it was and had no idea how much it was going to change my life. My son was 8 and I knew kids his age were playing Minecraft. I saw it as an opportunity for my son to start playing something to build cameraderie with kids at school and it was something we could do together.
Fast forward a year and we were recording our gameplay and even doing some livestreams in the early days of Twitch. We had a blast. We would play together and separately. We have countless hilarious stories including once when my son logged into his older sisters game and filled her house full of lava in an event she still can’t forgive him.
We watched SkyDoesMinecraft (before everything else that happened with them), CaptainSparklez, and Stampy. He convinced me to install just about every mod that ever existed.
As he got older, he played less Minecraft and found new games to pursue. By that time my next child was old enough to start playing. We played every night and I have hundreds of hours of us playing together on our own server, which is still running. Then my youngest was old enough to start playing and all three of us have built an amazing world. Central in the world is a family gag we loving call the “big butt Enderman” which is the first thing built in any new world.
In addition to playing the game, they found Minecraft music and I listened to it for hours with them, with Revenge, TNT, and Supernatural Mobs on heavy rotation. My two youngest also love Stampy and Sqaishey and watch them nearly every day.
Minecraft has created incredible bonding moments with my kids and I’m so thankful we found it. I love Minecraft not for the game, but what it brought my family.
My problem with the trailer
I was insulted. I was angry. I still am. I could go into a long rant about every aspect of the trailer that I find infuriating. However, I’m going to focus on just one aspect.
I felt like they were making fun of us. They are calling us losers and making fun of the people who love a stupid little game of blocks.
The moment Jack Black announces he is Steve I could feel the anger rushing to my face. How could they do this to a property that millions of people love? How could they insult all of us this way? How could they insult my house, my kids, and the incredible moments I’ve had like this?
They clearly don’t get it.
The Minecraft movie should be a celebration of the Minecraft community. Minecraft is nothing without its creators. The countless people that have created (for free) videos, music, mods, streams, texture packs, servers, mini games, and more. Minecraft is nothing without kids using it as the place to hang out with their friends. YouTube is nothing without the millions of hours of gameplay recorded and posted. Twitch is nothing without Minecraft streams. Most of the creator economy was forged by Minecrafters working through blood, sweat, and tears.
To put out a trailer this awful was more than insulting. They are making fun of us.
How else do I interpret this monstrosity?
I am a child of the 80s and I am used to my childhood properties being gutted for nostalgic profit. But, Minecraft is different. Minecraft is a place. Minecraft is the place I bonded with my kids and have countless memories. Its a place my kids bonded with each other. Its a place where my kids bonded with new friends. Its a place I am now using to bond with my nephew.
This movie should be a celebration of the people that made Minecraft what it is today. It should have creators directly involved in its making. It should have clearly pointed out how much the community means to Minecraft.
Instead, they spit in our face.
I’m mad and sad and disapointed and insulted and depressed and, and, and.
