Little Bits - November 2024
Just a collection of things that either don’t warrant a full blog post, or I’m still thinking about them and will have a longer post later once I get my head wrapped around the topic.
Managing bookmarks sucks
I’ve been re-evaluating my bookmarking setup and there’s just not a lot of great options. In reality, creating and managing bookmarks is a pain in the ass. Currently I use a self-hosted instance of Shaarli to save general bookmarks and an instance of Archivebox for pages I want to save in my own hoard. Then, I use Pocket for longreads so I can listen to them while working. Oh, and I also use zimit to download full websites for my archive, too.
This is overly complicated. I want to be able to add bookmarks from any browser on a PC or mobile device that will save a downloaded version. Downloading is important because I add pages to my notes when working on a project. I also want to save local copies so they don’t disappear by the time I get to them. The offline copies need to be easily accessible in flat files so I can find them without having to run the application that saved them. Just needs to be html or markdown files on my disk.
Still researching and testing at the moment.
Consolidating to one PC
After chatting about my file syncing conundrum with a few folks on Mastodon, I think I’m gonna make my Chromebook Duet 3 my primary device and stop using my desktop. Managing two devices, plus a phone, as my primary computing is a pain in the ass making sure all the files are in the right places. I don’t do anything that requires more than a web browser, terminal, and an office suite, so the Chromebook is more than up to the task.
I’m gonna test it out for a week or two and see how it goes. I am currently reconfiguring my desk with a custom docking solution.
Discovered a connection
This was a fun adventure I went on today. This morning I saw this post from JCProbably on Mastodon that mentioned blogroll.club, which is an indie blog directory for discovering new people to follow. I added it to my RSS feed reader and started looking through older adds. In this post from mid-September I found zkbro and added them to my feed reader as I love posts about link dumps/stashes.
In a link stash from the end of October from zkbro I saw an article that, from the headline, sounded interesting. When I clicked it was one of my posts! On my blog! How cool and weird! I was so excited.
I don’t want to upgrade my phone, but I have to
My phone isn’t getting security updates and I have to upgrade. But, I really don’t want to. I love my phone and how it is setup. Every time I think about researching, purchasing, and migrating to a new phone I want to curl up into a ball on the floor.
Please don’t make me upgrade!
I have to, though. I honestly don’t want another Samsung and I don’t want all the A.I. junk that now comes on new devices.
I think I’m gonna barf.
Cars
My life is full of car related crap. My daughter and her fiance drive two of my cars and I want to sell/transfer the cars to them. The process is a pain the ass. Then, the car my daughter drives got hit while parked at work. My son has to get his drivers license and I’m the one to teach him. Our business needs to buy two(!) trucks before the end of the year.
I’m gonna barf again.
Proud of my son
For his birthday, my son coordinated a meet-up with his friends. They became friends through various games and online communities and now all hangout in the same Discord server. They have never met in person, although have done plenty of video chats. He coordinated it with everyone, some of which came from more than 3 hours away! They had a good day and are already planning their next.
