Bookmark Hoard No. 1
I love reading posts that are a collection of links that a person found interesting. In fact, it is one of my favorite features of the indie web. It seems like ever indie blogger does these sorts of posts and I figured I should join the fray.
I used to write monthly retrospectives that included a list of links I found interesting, but I stopped writing the retrospectives and therefore stopped sharing interesting links. Hopefully I can keep these kinds of posts on a regular cadence.
Here are the links I felt needed to be shared:
- Using static websites for tiny archives. This post changed my thinking on how I organize, manage, and view my bookmarks. Although I enjoy self-hosting, I have been craving to simplify my tech life. Less web services. Less databases. More files organized in folders on a single device (with backups, of course).
- Lost In The Future. I’m a big fan of Ed Zitron’s newsletter and this entry hits home for me. The post includes, among a number of other things, how journalism and journalists need to stop attempting to be “unbiased” and delivering “just the facts”. People need guidance on what information means and what the fallout could be now more than ever. It is also a critique of how awful tech is nowadays and how it is ruining our lives due to inept development, a lack of good ideas, monopolies, and the rot economy.
- Using personal weeknotes as a tool for attention. Another thing indie bloggers love are weekly summaries. I love to read them, but loathe to write. Please, if you write a weekly round-up, keep going! I read every one I can find. Reading this post hasn’t changed my mind about writing weeknotes for this blog, but has me thinking I should start writing them for myself.
- How to live under rising authoritarianism, according to a philosopher who did it bravely. This is a Vox post about Viktor Frankl with excerpts from his book Man’s Search for Meaning. For those that may not know, Frankl is a concentration camp survivor who became a world renowed psychologist and author. Frankl’s work has brought controversy, which is not for me to decide as I am not a psychologist, Jewish, or a survivor of one of the worst atrocities in human history. I have a lot of respect for Frankl’s writings and have found inspiration in them. After reading this article I have been thinking a lot about what does life want from me?
- O BlackBerry, Where Art thou?. This is a fun post from bbbhltz and the format is great. I loved my Blackberry and only reluctantly switched away when the company I worked for at the time required everyone to use iPhones. I think my first non-Blackberry smartphone was the iPhone 3GS, whereas my wife had the original Android G1 Dream. I not only miss my Blackberry, but also miss some sort of real competition to Android and iOS, just like this post illustrates.
Some posts from my internet friends
Just a list of links from blogs I love to read and people I regularly interact with online.
- New Job from Andreas
- Installing NewPipe on GoogleTV from Jon
- Week Notes 31 from JCProbably
- Who are we archiving for? from M.Forester
App picks
- Marksman, a markdown LSP that integrates with VSCode, NeoVim, and my favorite, Helix.
- ptyxis, a terminal emulator with first-class suppport for containers. This is a terminal emulator for those on immutable distros who use distrobox.
- EPubPress, for converting webpages into ebooks and reading offline. I have tested, but not used frequently enough for a throrough opinion. I love that you can feed it multiple links and will convert into a single ebook.
- couchtube, A self-hosted, YouTube based application that recreates the feel of a TV channel. Another thing I haven’t personally setup, but is on the short list to try. Probably pairs well with ErsatzTV.
