My current default apps for 2024

I started following people and feeds who share their default apps so I figured I’d join in. Be sure to check out my companion post about why I think most other default app lists are boring as hell.

This is my list of apps I use for getting work done and the other general tasks I need to do on my mobile and laptop or desktop. Essentially it is a list of apps I use nearly everyday.

My mobile is a Samsung Galaxy S10e, laptop a Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3 (chromeOS), and my (current) desktop is a GMKTec NucBox G3 running Pop_OS. I am an avid self-hoster, so a lot of items below connect to my homelab.

About a year ago I started completely shifting away from my Google account, after it being my primary account for most things for over a decade. I still have some legacy info in there, so I keep it connected to a short list of apps.

  • 📨 Mail Client: Proton Mail; Gmail (legacy account maintenance)
  • 📮 Mail Server: Proton Mail; Gmail (legacy account maintenance)
  • 📝 Notes: Obsidian
  • ✅ To-Do: Self-hosted Radicale server + Tasks.org (mobile); todoman (desktop).
  • 📷 Photo Shooting: Stock Samsung camera
  • 🟦 Photo Management: Stock gallery (mobile); Self-hosted PhotoPrism for backups & archive viewing.
  • 📆 Calendar: Self-hosted Radicale server + Etar (mobile); calcurse (desktop). Also includes ICSx app (mobile) for linking legacy Google calendars.
  • 📁 Cloud File Storage: Local NAS & Syncthing + Dufs (web frontend) & nfs
  • 🗃 Files: Stock files app (mobile); yazi (desktop)
  • 📜 Office: LibreOffice
  • 📖 RSS: Self-hosted FreshRSS server + FreshRSS web (mobile); newsboat (desktop)
  • 🙍🏻‍♂️ Contacts: ??. Personally, nothing. I guess I have contacts in our business CRM.
  • 🌐 Browser: Vivaldi (mobile + desktop) & Chrome (chromeOS)
  • 💬 Chat: Discord; Signal
  • 🔖 Bookmarks: Self-hosted Shaarli server for everyday bookmarks; Self-hosted ArchiveBox for long term archiving; zimit for full website archiving + self-hosted Kiwix
  • 📑 Read It Later: Shaarli + proper tagging
  • 📰 News: FreshRSS web
  • 🎵 Music: Collect with spotdl; Serve with Navidrome; Ultrasonic (mobile); Navidrome web (desktop)
  • 🎬 Movies/TV: *arr + Jellyseerr + Jellyfin
  • 🔴 YouTube: Tubular (mobile); Freetube (desktop)
  • 🎤 Podcasts: AntennaPod
  • 🔐 Password Management: Self-hosted Vaultwarden; Bitwarden apps (mobile & desktop)

Other:

  • 🔎 Search: Self-hosted Searx-NG
  • 💬 Social: Self-hosted GotToSocial (Mastodon) + self-hosted Phanpy client
  • 📚 Reading: Libby (audiobooks); Physical books
