Rant about blogs and the IndieWeb
I’m feeling extra spicy. I want to talk about how exhausted I am with the “IndieWeb”. A lot of this is off-the-cuff and I’m sure it will rankle a few folks. I want to say up front, this is a huge rant and I don’t blame you for bouncing off it.
Also, do not reply to me. I don’t care about your opinion on these topics. You blog about whatever you want, I’m just some guy. I’m not going to argue with you about anything. This is just my opinion.
You might have seen me post this briefly yesterday and then pull it down. I had a think about it and decided I’m still right.
I posted this a while back:

Not only does this hold true, but it gets more true the more blogs I read. I’m subscribed to a few hundred blogs, most focused on either tech or from folks who enjoy tech. Every day my feed has dozens of posts from folks who are seriously nice people. But…
Shut the fuck up about A.I.
Seriously. Stop talking about it. I get it, A.I. is disrupting your career. Businesses are making bad decisions that include A.I.. I get it.
But, for the love of God, find something else to talk about. Every day 80% of the posts are people talking about A.I.. I mostly left Mastodon because you all WILL NOT STOP FUCKING TALKING ABOUT A.I..
Please.
Please talk about anything else. Tell me about your dog. The weird plant you saw. Something funny you read. What your parents said to you recently. See a cool rock? Got a rash on your foot? Talk about anything else. PLEASE. I’m begging you. Find something else to do in life. You like tech, I get it. Is there anything else happening on your computer? Literally anything else (except for the next section of this rant)? Change your screenshot key combo? Set a static IP? Come on, I’ll take anything. Just shut the fuck up about A.I..
Now, the next complaint.
Shut the fuck up about Apple.
I get it, you like them. You’ve spent a lot of money on Apple products and services. I get it. But, shut the fuck up about Apple. Apple is a $1T+ corporation. They don’t need your free marketing.
Now, I know I talk a lot about Linux and you could say I’m doing the same thing as these Apple folks, talking about something you enjoy. However, I’m not writing posts about fucking Gnome UI changes or the latest System76 laptop. I write mostly about the projects I’m working on. That would be okay if Apple fan fucks did that, wrote about shit they’re doing with their Apple product. But no. Apple releases something and suddenly everyone is a fucking engineer or designer with a fucking hot take about whatever the fuck Apple is doing. Just admit it, you want to suck the fucking dick of every Apple CEO. It would be even better if they had two dicks, then you can suck both of them at the same time. Not everyone has to have a take on the fucking Neo. You don’t need to share your take on Liquid Glass. Jesus fucking Christ, have some personality. You’re not a fucking journalist and your blog isn’t The Verge.
Last rant.
Shut the fuck up about your blog.
Oh, your blog was Hugo then you decided to use 11ty? Made some CSS changes? Changed the VPS host?
Who give a fuck. I know, you felt like you had to publish something. Can you talk about a recipe you made recenlty instead?
Create a slash page and keep it updated. I know, you put a lot of work into your site and you’re proud of it. Cool. But, your blog is basically just complaining about A.I. and meta posts about your fucking blog or the act of blogging.
Here’s the classic IndieWeb blog:
- What I built my blog with
- Why I chose a certain VPS
- How I post from my phone
- My blogging workflow
- A.I. is awful
- I moved my blog to a new SSG
- I updated how my RSS feed looks
- My blog git workflow
It is impossible to tell your blog apart from a slop site. I’m here to read your blog, written by a human with human emotions, not a blog about your fucking blog. The only thing I take away from meta posts is that you like to smell your own farts.
The other half of these posts is meta posting about the act of blogging and why its cool. Is it? Is what you do actual blogging? Cause it kinda feels like you only post about blogs and blogging, and not writing an actual fucking blog. Why would anyone consider creating a blog in 2026 when most other blogs are just talking about blogging? There’s a huge section of the IndieWeb that is one giant fucking circle jerk for talking about blogging and blogs, but not actually fucking blogging.
Most blogs have the personality of a fucking saltine.
Okay, rant over. Not leaving my contact info because I don’t want to hear from people who disagree with this post. Go write a post about 11ty becoming Blog Awesome or some shit.
